Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief of the excavations for a new water main was carried out at Mosstowie, Elgin by Highland Archaeology Services Ltd, in response to a request from Aberdeenshire Archaeology service which advises Moray Council. A back-acting digger fitted with a straight edged ditching bucket opened the trench under archaeological supervision, eight possible features were uncovered, examined and recorded, the conclusion being that they all appeared to be either natural or the result of 19th or 20th century steam ploughing. There are two sites in close proximity (NMRS NJ16SE14), two sub-circular enclosures noted from aerial reconnaissance from 1977. Also, Moray SMR (Moray SMR NJ16SE011 and NJ16SE0035) note at least four ring ditches in the vicinity in a tight group, with one slightly overlying the other. These features however, were not threatened by the course of the water main pipe. |
