Abstract:
Archenfield Archaeology conducted an evaluation excavation at the Conder Building in Castle Street, Worcester, offices of Hereford and Worcester Chamber of Commerce. The initial fieldwork consisted of the excavation of two trenches to correspond with the well of a new lift shaft and the foundations of a new wall. This was followed by the observation of the excavation of a new service trench. The project produced evidence of intensive Roman activity, some of which seemed to be of an industrial nature. The evidence included a clay oven base of between 288 and 357AD, sherds of pottery, and quantities of daub and wall plaster, some of which was painted. Three hearth like features suggested industrial activity. Two large pots, which had been buried upright, and seemed to be associated with metal-working activities, were recovered from the site.
