Abstract:		 An archaeological evaluation was carried out by Terrain Archaeology in the back gardens of 41-45 High Street, Shaftesbury (ST 864229), during January/February 2001, on behalf of Provincial and Maritime Ltd. The evaluation comprised the excavation of six hand-dug test pits. Medieval soils and possible garden features were revealed in three testpits across the central part of the site. Elsewhere, the early stratigraphy either had been truncated by 19th century terracing, or was so deeply buried beneath 19th century deposits, that it was not revealed. The artefacts recovered from the site suggested occupation from the 11th century onwards.
