Abstract: |
A historic building recording and investigation were undertaken at St Luke's National School, land at 29-65 Garden Street, Sheffield. An earlier one-room Sunday School had been built on the site in 1789. The Sunday School was demolished and re-built in classical style in 1876 by H.D. Lomas as a parochial school, on a much larger scale. There do not appear to be any elements of the earlier school surviving in the present building. All the local housing was demolished in the late 1920s / early 1930s and only a few works buildings and the school remained. The former school is the only surviving 19th century building on the site. By the mid 1930s, the school fell out of use and was subsequently converted to industrial usage in connection with a new works. Further alterations in the latter part of the 20th century involved extensive alterations to the ground floor layout. The basement and first floor remained relatively unaltered. The original T plan layout of the former school building is still clearly discernible, with significant elements of the original detailing intact. |
