Abstract:		 In September-October 2004, Border Archaeology carried out a limited-scale excavation under Scheduled Monument Consent on Court House Moated Site, Pembridge, on behalf of the Pembridge Amenity Trust. The site comprises a large, irregular D-shaped mound 40m wide and 50m in length, surrounded by a moat about 15m wide and 2.5m deep. One trench was excavated within the moat and two on the mound's summit. The trench excavated within the moat revealed its original cut and two subsequent re-cuts, as well as rubble deposits, possibly deriving from masonry structures on top of the mound which collapsed into the moat. In the two trenches excavated on the mound's summit, walls were uncovered associated with masonry structures on the mound, the earliest probably dating from the late 11th/early 12th century. It appears that these buildings were either destroyed or severely damaged by fire on two separate occasions during the medieval period, after both of which the moat was deepened and the surface level of the mound re-established prior to the buildings' reconstruction. It is unclear when these phases of destruction and rebuilding occurred; however, based on the pottery assemblage, it would appear that the first phase of destruction occurred early on, potentially in the early 12th century, while the second destruction event may have taken place in the late 13th/14th century. Later records show the buildings on the mound were intermittently repaired throughout the 15th and 16th centuries and that occupation of the site had probably ceased by the early 17th century.
