Abstract:
Building recording was undertaken at Winnall Lodge in October 2011 by Mike Napthan Archaeology in response to the proposed demolition and replacement of the existing house. The house appears to have originated as a 17th hunting lodge. The original structure consists of a two storey single bay building of timber framing over a stone built basement. The earliest phase has been dated by tree-ring dating to 1626 by the Nottingham tree-ring dating laboratory. A second building was constructed to the east of the putative lodge in 1688 and the existing building was incorporated to form the western end of a three-bay cottage. The property was, by this time already in the hands of the Winnall family, which was one of the main land owning families in the vicinity from at least the 14th century to the late 19th century. The 1814 layout persisted into the mid 20th century but has subsequently been much altered by a series of fairly ad hoc extensions that mask the original form. The out-house appears to have been incorporated into the domestic ranges by the mid 20th Century. Major extensions (exceeding the combined volume of the original two structures) were added in the late 1970s-1980s, and subsequently further small extensions were added to these. The western and southern sides of the original lodge structure were almost entirely rebuilt (partly in replica framing) in the 1980s or early 1990s. The building complex, as it stood in late 2011 showed a sorry appearance of ill thought out and insensitive alterations, very little of the original fabric being externally visible. Within the building, however, it was clear that a substantial amount of the original framing of two timber framed structures survived. The buildings were demolished in November 2011 to clear the site for a new residence. .
