Abstract:
In February and March 2012, Souterrain Archaeological Services Limited carried out archaeological investigation and recording during ground preparation for an office extension at No.1 Cobbs Court, Olney, Buckinghamshire. The earliest archaeological features comprised five medieval cellar-pits, one with evidence of a suspended floor, and a series of substantial post-holes. It is probable that the structures belonged to a tenement that fronted the former High Street in the 12th/13th century. The faunal remains and environmental data present an image of domestic occupancy and economy, with diet including wheat, cattle, sheep or goat, pig and eel. Primary butchery of livestock was carried out either at the site or nearby. The structures were removed, possibly in the 14th century, to make way for timber-framed building on stone built sill-beam pads. A deep dry-stone lined cellar adjoined the timber-framed building. The cellar was disused by the early decades of the 19th century. Significantly, the investigation revealed the first positively identifiable structural evidence of a 12th / 13thcentury tenement from the former burgage plots flanking the High Street at Olney. The evidence, not only permits correlation with early 13th century documentary sources for a planned borough, a main feature of which was the establishment of the burgage plots, but may suggest that the street frontage was further back than it is today.
