Abstract:
Tree-ring analysis of 22 measured samples (three further samples having too few rings for reliable dating) from a range of locations within no.10 Main Street produced a single site chronology, HRNASQ01, comprising 16 samples, and having an overall length of 164 rings. These rings were dated as spanning the years 1448 - 1611. Interpretation of the sapwood on the dated samples indicates that it is possible that there are very slight differences in date, corresponding to small additions or changes to the main structure, but it is not possible to determine these dates with reliable precision. It is estimated that the main range is constructed of timber felled in the period 1618 - 22, with the porch being added to it almost immediately, possibly as part of this phase of construction. The outshot at the north end may have been added to the main range a year or two later, with the west facing gable at the north end being added or changed a few years after that. It is very unlikely that any part of the building examined in this programme of analysis is later than, say, 1630.
