Abstract:
A caesium magnetometer survey was carried out on land north of manor Farm, Croydon, Cambridgeshire. The work was undertaken in October 2014. The purpose of the survey was to determine the nature and extent of any archaeological deposits that lie within the proposed development area for a solar farm and associated works. Three fields were surveyed. Field 1 revealed no archaeological anomalies of significance. Field 2 showed a few anomalies that may be archaeological in origin. In Field 3 a series of rectilinear, linear and individual anomalies were detected. An arrangement of linear and rectilinear anomalies was recorded on the western side of field. These appear to denote ditched enclosures of unknown origin. Immediately to the east of the ditched enclosures, two amorphous shaped anomalies were detected indicating the presence of burning, which may reflect kilns. Other linear, curivilinear and rectilinear anomalies to the north and east of the main foci represent ditches of unknown origin. A series of linear anomalies were recorded in all three fields indicating the presence of the ploughed out remains of ridge and furrow. In each of the fields, linear anomalies were detected denoting former field boundaries that have been removed in the last century. These are depicted on the first edition Ordnance Survey maps. Other anomalies recorded during the survey appear to denote plough marks, tractor ruts or magnetic responses from the underyling soils and geology. No other anomalies of archaeological significance were recorded.
