Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on the groundworks pertaining to the construction of construction of three new cottages and associated hard and soft landscaping on land at The Rookery, East Road, Navenby, Lincolnshire. The archaeological monitoring identified simple deposit sequences which consisted of one modern made ground deposit, which was quite clearly associated with the recent demolition of former cottage son this site and with the subsequent site clearance. The remainder of the deposits identified consisted of several topsoils or garden soils associated with this former occupation and underlying buried soil/or ploughsoil horizon, the latter of which were undated. A natural horizon of cornbrash was also recorded at various locations at the base of the trench excavations. A circular shaped brick lined well of post-medieval date was locates at the south-eastern corner of the new build area. This was also probably associated with the cottages which had formerly stood on this site. No archaeological activity was identified on this site and there were no finds. |
