Abstract:		 In 2012, the Swaledale and Arkengarthdale Archaeology Group (SWAAG) led by Tim Laurie FSA identified clear evidence of lead smelting and a potential lead bale site centred at SE 05939 99137. The site was noted to be under direct risk of severe damage from rabbits, and was characterised by looking at slag and charcoal within and outside the rabbit burrows. A joint project was then set up in the summer of 2013 between SWAAG and the Northern Mine Research Society (NMRS) to archaeologically investigate the bale site, with Richard Smith of NMRS directing the fieldwork alongside Tim Laurie of SWAAG, with Tony Liddell of Vindomora Solutions providing professional archaeological recording support.
