Abstract:		 Addyman Archaeology were commissioned to complete an archaeological assessment of a large kiln structure at Reekimlane near Cabrach in Moray. The area, and the site in particular, are historically associated with the production of whisky and illicit distilling. Marc Ellington and Andrew Wright produced a comprehensive and detailed report on the history and structural development of Cabrach, identifying the kiln as an anomalous structure requiring further archaeological investigation. Addyman Archaeology completed an initial archaeological assessment and detailed recording of the structure, following this with a detailed topographic survey to put the kiln in its wider context, and a trial excavation of the interior of the kiln. Although the physical evidence of the kiln tended to suggest a use for lime burning, it was hoped the excavation would reveal burnt or charred grain to confirm the use of the structure for corn drying. In the event, excavation of the kiln structure proved to be too problematic due to the presence of a large tree stump and associated roots within the interior of the kiln. The presence of the stump limited excavation to a small section along the northern edge of the kiln. The root system of the tree, and the constrictive nature of the excavation meant that this had to be halted after c.0.90m. 19th century ceramics and glass was recovered from within and below the main tree stump, but no evidence was recovered that indicated the use of the kiln for the production of whisky.
