Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was maintained on the groundworks pertaining to the construction of a two new detached residential dwellings. Over most of the monitored areas, the archaeological monitoring identified a consistent deposit sequence which consisted of a modern imported topsoil/landscaping deposit, a modern made ground deposit, which was the product of the demolition and site clearance of former buildings on these sites, an undated buried ploughsoil horizon and an underlying natural horizon. The line of a north-south orientated drainage dyke of post-medieval- early modern date was identified along the western edge of the new build area of House Plot 1. This had at first been allowed to gradually silt up and was then infilled in the 20th century prior to the construction of a former building on the site. This archaeological monitoring did not identify any archaeological activity on this site and there were no finds. No archaeological activity or finds associated with nearby known Roman occupation or with the medieval and post-medieval settlements of Donington was identified. |
