Abstract:
A field evaluation, consisting of four trenches, was conducted by the Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust on behalf of Lord Bradford, in connection with the potential development of a green-field plot on the eastern side of the village of Llanymynech, in Shropshire (SJ 268 209). The evaluation followed on from earlier stages of work which included a desk-based assessment, geophysical survey and an assessment of potential visual impacts. Archaeological interest in the plot focused on a series of cropmarks recorded in 1976, which included a possible Bronze Age ring-ditch (or ploughed-out burial and/or ritual monument), although neither the geophysical survey nor the present evaluation provided any evidence to confirm this interpretation. The formation of some of the cropmarks appears to be related to a series of fluvio-glacial features, while a gully thought to be part of the ring-ditch produced post-medieval pottery. A number of archaeological features were identified in one of the trenches, including one pit which contained burnt material, a second large, circular pit, an angled gully and a further pit or butted-ended gully, none of which produced any evidence to suggest their likely date or function.
