Abstract:
The report describes the results of a programme of archaeological watching brief at Jack Lee Mill, Knight Street, Macclesfield. The project aimed to assess the nature, preservation and extent of deposits relating to Knight's Mill, an early 19th century silk mill which occupied the site until the mid-20th century. A desk-based assessment by National Museums Liverpool Field Archaeology Unit (NMLFAU) identified the presence of former structures associated with Knight's Mill, in particular the former engine house and a possible waterwheel. An area towards the eastern side of the site was monitored during the removal of a modern concrete slab where the former engine house and possible wheel pit may have been situated. This revealed a group of foundations which may relate to Knight's Mill, however it was apparent that the engine house had been totally destroyed by the construction of Jack Lee Mill in the 1950s. No remains relating to water power were located.
