Abstract:		 Cuthbert's Yard lies close to Lincoln's historic core, and was originally part of a farm, but from the 1930s until 2010 was used for commercial purposes. Redevelopment of the site involved the demolition of all existing buildings and the construction of fourteen new dwellings. An archaeological evaluation carried out by LAT in 2007 revealed evidence for the Roman Colonia ditch, together with other features and deposits generally of post-17th century date. Planning permission granted in November 2008 included a condition requiring that all excavations beneath a depth of 500mm be monitored. LAT undertook site attendance between February 2011 and June 2012, but in spite of the site's apparent potential for Roman and medieval activity, the deposits recorded were of either natural origin or 17th to 20th century date. One notable discovery, however, was a hitherto unknown cemetery, likely to have been associated with a gallows known to have been situated either on, or close to, the site. Documents suggest that it was possibly in use between c. 1700 and c. 1817, and finds from the graves and the underlying deposit suggest a likely date for the burials of no earlier than the mid-late 17th to early-mid 18th century, which correlates nicely with the available historical evidence. Beyond the discovery of the burial ground, the confirmation of the locations of the two Second World War air-raid shelters, while perhaps of somewhat limited appeal, undoubtedly also has merit for scholars of more recent history.
