Abstract:
ARCUS were commissioned by Arup, on behalf of Kier Build Ltd, in August 2005, to undertake an archaeological watching brief monitoring ground investigation works on land at Silverdale School, Sheffield, South Yorkshire. The watching brief was required as part of a planning application for redevelopment of the school. Silverdale School was constructed in 1956. The watching brief indicated that the multi-level site had been created through substantial landscaping, in order to counteract the sloping terrain. During the monitoring a single brick wall was identified and recorded in the northwest of the site. This feature was associated with mid- to late-twentieth-century tennis courts that were formerly located in this area. With the exception of a modern land drain, no further sub-surface structural deposits were observed.
