Abstract:
Bristol and Region Archaeological Services were commissioned by Mr Rick Tanton to undertake an archaeological desk-based assessment for land at Principle''s House, Silverhill School, Swan Lane, Winterbourne, Bristol, South Gloucestershire, BS36 1RL (NGR ST 64964 81345). The study area is situated on the west side of the village of Winterbourne, located 13km to the north of Bristol. The evidence examined suggests that the study area has been enclosed within the grounds of Winterbourne House from the 17th century onwards and has been a walled garden from the mid 18th century. There is no specific evidence for its use prior to the construction of Winterbourne House. The grounds of Winterbourne House in which the study area lies is considered to be an area of some archaeological potential, not least in view of the two Grade II listed buildings in proximity to the study area.
