Abstract:
Historic Building Recording and Archaeological Monitoring at Rookery Farm Barn Church Road Westhorpe, Stowmarket, Suffolk IP14 4SU Assessment of the barn, its date, construction method and historical value. To assess the development of the barn within a late medieval/Tudor farm complex within the village of Westhorpe, Suffolk. Archaeological monitoring of ground-works as part of the conversion of the barn to a domestic dwelling. The barn is situated in close proximity to the medieval village church, and any ground-works within the development could reveal archaeological features related to the church and or associated medieval remains. The farm to which the barn belongs is a grade 2 listed building of mid to late fifteenth century date and has possible origins as a guildhall. There is also potential for Roman occupation on the site due to known Roman finds collected by metal detecting in an adjacent field (HER: WTP 006). A full description of the finds can be found in: he Historic environment Office, Suffolk County Council Archaeology Department, Shire Hall Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. The historic building recording was carried out during the autumn/winter of 2008 and the archaeological monitoring has not yet commenced.
