Abstract:
Stratascan were commissioned by L P Archaeology to undertake a geophysical survey of an area outlined for development. The magnetic susceptibility survey area covers approximately 19ha of agricultural land that dips towards the River Medina in the west and surrounds Kingston Copse. From this 3.7ha was selected for detailed magnetic survey. The highest areas of enhancement were in the northwest and southwest of the site with areas of moderate enhancement in the east. A detailed magnetic survey was carried out over 3.7ha and targeted on areas of high, moderate and low enhancement revealed from reconnaissance. In the northwest of the site the high enhancement correlated with an area of magnetic debris which is likely to relate to dumped thermoremnant material. Positive area anomalies, predominately in the east of the site, appear to have the form of features formed by fluvial activity. Although several low magnitude positive linear anomalies have been located they do not appear as characteristically archaeological features.
