Abstract:		 Records indicate that Boyton Mill may be located on a medieval mill site. The existing, mainly 19th century, building was rebuilt in the early 19th century on the footprint of an earlier structure and retaining some of the older fabric. The documentary and cartographic evidence suggests that it was formerly a double mill, with two millwheels aligned against the north wall driving four pairs of millstones. In the late 19th century a single storey open fronted cart shed was added to the west end and the building was raised and internally altered to accommodate the current layshaft drive and two pairs of millstones, with the eastern side of the building retaining this arrangement. In the early part of the 20th century a single storey extension was added to the east end. The western end of the building was substantially rebuilt and the interior modified in the later 20th century, with the ground floor infilled with rubble.
