Abstract:
A planning application has been made for the erection of a wind turbine at Grogarth Farm, just to the north west of the medieval settlement of Tregony. HE projects were requested by the applicant to undertaken an archaeological assessment of the proposed development, working to a brief supplied the HEPAO, Cornwall Council. A desk based assessment was undertaken, together with viewshed analysis was undertaken to determine potential impacts on the settings of designated and undesignated heritage assets in line with English Heritage Planning Guidance. The findings of the DBA and viewshed analysis were checked and recorded on the ground using direct observation and digital photography. Given the elevated location proposed for the wind turbine and the local topography, not unexpectedly the viewshed indicated that the turbine would be intervisible with heritage assets located within the surrounding landscape, including parts of the Tregony Conservation Area and elements of the Registered Parks and Gardens at Trewithen and Trewarthenick, from the scheduled Golden Camp to the north east, from listed buildings in Tregony and from three Grade 1 listed churches at Cornelly, Cuby and Creed. Despite the high intervisibility of the turbine with a significant number of designated heritage assets within the surrounding landscape, it is not felt likely to be a dominating presence, and therefore would not have a significant impact on their settings. NMP aerial photo plots suggest that elements of an Iron Age/Romano-British field system associated with a cropmark enclosure to the south-west may extend into the development site.
