Abstract:
This survey is part of the Herefordshire Woodlands Archaeological Survey undertaken in partnership with the Forestry Commission. A rapid site identification survey was carried out in Haugh Wood (North West) using a hand held Global Positioning System to record the location of archaeological features encountered. Earthwork features were recorded within the wood that illustrate a history of intensive woodland management since the post medieval period, including wood boundaries, charcoal burning platforms, saw pits, networks of deeply cut holloways and associated collection/storage platforms. Evidence of industrial activity was recorded in the form of quarries and trackways. Part of a relict field system was recorded close to the south-western edge of the survey area indicating that fields once extended into what is now woodland.
