Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out during the relaying of French drains around the perimeter of the chancel at St Edmund's Church, Warkton, during June 2014, The trenches were excavated entirely through grave earth; there were no cut features. The ashlar foundations of the chancel, which was built in 1749, were revealed. The north-western corner of the foundations lay on an area of loosely packed limestone rubble, some of which had flat, worked faces. The rubble may be the remains of the earlier chancel, either re-used and laid down as a base for the later foundations or may possibly be the in situ remains of one of the former buttresses. |
