Abstract:
This report was commissioned by AC Archaeology Ltd on behalf of Cavanna Homes Ltd (Devon). It has been prepared as part of a programme of work in support of a forthcoming planning application for a proposed residential development at the above site. The magnetic contrast across the area was sufficient to be able to differentiate between anomalies representing possible archaeological features and background magnetic responses. Twenty-three magnetic anomaly groups were identified as relating to possible archaeological deposits or features. Of these, the majority are most likely to relate to field boundaries and other enclosures of more than one phase of previous land management. Two groups reflect former field boundaries mapped between 1840 and 1991. Three groups are most likely to represent recent routes taken by stock animals, past multiple tracks such as holloways or natural deposits perhaps related to underlying geology. One sub-circular deposit of unknown provenance was mapped but may relate to ground disturbance associated with a now removed cattle feeder although an archaeological origin cannot be ruled out. One group, prominent in the data set, may represent a stony deposit of possible archaeological significance.
