Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation comprising a single 10m long evaluation trench was excavated within the medieval settlement of Upper Brailes, probably within the area refounded as a borough in the 13th century. The site is close to the present street frontage and also lies immediately adjacent to earthworks which possibly represent building platforms. The trench revealed at least two medieval layers, possibly the result of small scale cultivation or animal husbandry containing 12-13th century pottery. No clear features were exposed during the evaluation although a small linear concentration of limestone might have indicated the presence of a structure. The site must lie within part of a medieval plot laid out in the 12th or 13th century, although the boundaries of this plot are now unclear. |
