Abstract:		 A Level 1 programme of building recording was undertaken in advance of demolition to support a planning application for redevelopment of the site for residential development near the western city limits, which was only built-up in the later 19th century. In 1918 H. Newsum and Sons, 'constructional joiner', moved to Carholme Road from Pelham Street, building the premises on open ground. The former boardroom and offices were built in 1919, followed by a row of villas along Carholme Road in 1921. These buildings are all that survive of the Newsum's site which was sold in 1956 and converted to an electronics factory. The factory buildings were demolished in 2011 and the site developed for housing. The buildings are mainly constructed in brick with blue slate roofing. The front elevation and wings have heavy cornices. Keystones on the front elevation windows are limestone as are the window sills. There were at least three main phase of construction, with additional internal alterations, which could not be placed with confidence into a definitive chronological order. In addition to the front foyer and the Boardroom there were three offices with oak panelling and originally had fireplaces, all of the highest quality. All the fireplaces had been removed, only the surrounds surviving. Two of these offices were not part of the original build, indicating that the panelling was an upgrading of the offices. The decor of the rooms provides an insight into the hierarchy that operated in the running of the offices.
