Abstract:		 Due to a gas leak, an emergency excavation was carried out near the south-eastern corner of the Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula. Given the historically sensitive nature of the area, the presence of an archaeologist was vital in order to monitor the excavation. A number of heavily mixed, fragmented and disarticulated human bones were uncovered, as well as a pair of loosely articulated feet and the possible disintegrated remains of a wood coffin, suggesting the presence of in situ burials at a depth of just 1m below the current ground surface. Several pieces of coffin furniture were also found including, coffin grips, nails and studs all made of iron. Later land-use and building works at the Tower of London disturbed pre-existing in-situ burials, which resulted in this re-deposition of human bone. The human bone uncovered presents some local significance regarding the presence of burials associated with the Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula and the population associated with the parish.
