Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief carried out during the excavation of foundation trenches at Laurel House, Church Street, Welford-on-Avon exposed no archaeological deposits associated with the surrounding medieval settlement. The remains of two wooden posts might be associated with the very large number of outbuildings depicted on the late 19th century First Edition of the Ordnance Survey which evidently were demolished and replaced by other outbuildings by the 1923 Edition. Several of these latter buildings have subsequently been demolished, with one single brick wall exposed in the foundation trenches and a large amount of building debris mixed in with the upper layer of soil. Pottery dating from the first half of the 19th century and the early 20th century was also recovered from this layer. Although the site very likely lies within the area of medieval development, it is also likely that any such buildings have been subsumed by the current edifice and/or destroyed by the myriad outbuildings that subsequently developed. |
