Abstract: |
Following the initial stage of survey and trial excavation at Fort Charlotte carried out by Kirkdale Archaeology in September 2006, a second stage of trial trenching was undertaken to expose the remaining sections of the E wall in advance of piling work to strengthen the wall. Eight trial trenches were excavated adjacent to the interior face of the E wall. The trenches were located over the sites of various 18th Century to 20th Century buried structures within the fort, the probable locations of which were devised from a series of historic plans of the fort. The objective of this work was to investigate the archaeological remains of the structures and to check the accuracy of the plans, particularly in the areas of hidden gun platforms 4 and 5, in order to ensure that the piles avoided such structures. |
