Abstract:
In September 2008, North Pennines Archaeology Ltd undertook a field evaluation, consisting of two trial trenches, at Brough Castle, Brough, Cumbria. The work was commissioned by English Heritage in order to investigate the condition of the foundations at the northern extent of the castle. The work was required due to the observation that the northern side of the castle was exhibiting signs of subsidence, the effects of which would require some form of response or mitigation strategy to either repair or stabilise the monument. Two trial trenches were hand dug against the northern curtain wall, to assess the condition and depth of the foundations of the wall. The Evaluation found that the foundations exisited to a depth of approximately 0.5-0.8m. The condition of the foundations would be inadequate to support the Northern Curtain wall from further subsidence, and a mitigation strategy was therefore advised.
