Abstract: |
Following a proposal to convert a group of farm buildings a programme of recording was undertaken by Greenlane Archaeology. Three of the buildings involved in the proposal are Grade II Listed while the other is not; another Listed building, which was intended to be included in the redevelopment at a later date, was also recorded. Elliscales is recorded from the early 13th century, when its iron ore was exploited by the monks of Furness Abbey. The name indicates an earlier, Norse name, however, and its proximity to the chapel of St Helen. In the 17th century it was owned by Thomas Fell, the husband of Margaret Askew, who went on to marry George Fox the founder of the Quakers. The farm house (which was not included in the recording) is thought to be 17th century, while the outbuildings are undoubtedly later. The building recording revealed that the earliest element was a large threshing barn, within which re-used cruck blades indicate the presence of earlier buildings on the site. The threshing barn had a large horse engine attached to it, and was later extended with the addition of a bank barn at one end. Further buildings were added to the complex during the late 19th century, at which time the horse engine was remodelled, and more cosmetic alterations were made in the 20th century. |
