Abstract:
A magnetometer survey was carried out ahead of planning permission for a residential development in Carharrack, Redruth. The survey was commissioned as the site lies within the Cornwall and West Devon Mining World Heritage site and contains a capped mineshaft that may date to the 18th century. Several negative and positive linear anomalies appear to extend northwestwards from the capped mineshaft forming a possible rectilinear feature; however, a direct association with the mineshaft cannot be established, and the anomalies may relate to agricultural activity or relatively recent ground disturbance. Several other positive and negative anomalies have also been located indicating responses to enhanced material and material with low magnetic susceptibility. Many of these are linear and are parallel to the field boundaries within and surrounding the site possibly indicating agricultural origins. The site contains many strong magnetic anomalies indicating the presence of ferrous objects and material within the site. This type of response is often associated with dumped ferrous material although it should be considered that ferrous objects associated with mining may be represented.
