Abstract:
A second phase of evaluation excavation was undertaken by Terrain Archaeology at Sherrings Green Close, Blandford Road, Puddletown (SY 7559 9448), in order to evaluate possible prehistoric features discovered in the southern half of the site during the first phase of evaluation in August 2000. Two further trenches were excavated in July/August 2001. The archaeological remains were extremely difficult to define and understand. In the southeastern corner of the site was the remains of a possible circular monument, perhaps a round barrow or a small henge about 29 m in diameter, defined by a flat-bottomed ditch containing Beaker pottery in its upper fills. This monument appears to have become incorporated into the corner of a Middle Bronze Age field, which was sealed beneath a layer of prehistoric colluvium. A medieval field boundary ran north/south across the western part of the site, the precursor to an existing earthwork bank. This may have formed the eastern side of a drove road as traces of flint gravel road metalling were discovered adjacent to this boundary.
