Abstract: |
Transport for London (TfL) has been tasked with implementing the Cycle Hire Scheme within central London by summer 2010. Approximately 10, 200 docking points at around 400 sites at a density of approximately nine sites per square kilometre are required. A generic Written Scheme of Investigation was written for all sites requiring further archaeological investigation. As a result of a planning condition docking station 01/615105 was deemed to need further archaeological investigation. This investigation consisted of an archaeological watching brief during the goundworks for the docking station. Initially a length of 6.30m was archaeologically monitored. No archaeological features were observed and the pavement covered an old tarmac road surface. The made ground associated with the construction of the pavement and old road went to the maximum depth of the docking station foundations. The layout of the current street meant that it was evident the old road ran the whole footprint of the docking station so further archaeological monitoring of the groundworks was not deemed necessary. |
