Abstract: |
Small scale Watching Brief of two areas of the development just to the west of the previous watching brief, evaluation and standing building works recorded in OASIS report Compassa1-4026. Two areas of groundworks (Northern and Southern) were monitored involving the removal of existing concrete slabs and footings, no significant finds or features were present. In the Northern Area, to the southeast, natural gravel was present to a depth of c. 2m, overlain by 20th century madeground. The 19th century river wall recorded in this area had obviously been removed by previous works. Elsewhere shallow excavation revealed recent deposits and a number of service trenches. In the Southern Area the existing slab was about 0.5m thick overlying compacted rubble and made or disturbed ground. To the northwest probable natural sandy gravel was observed at a depth of 0.75m overlain by recent made ground. |
