Introduction

Hanley Hall, Gilberts End, Worcestershire

In October 2013 Cotswold Archaeology was commissioned by Parr Walker and Associates to carry out a programme of Historic Building Recording to English Heritage Level 3 at Hanley Hall as a condition of Listed Building Consent.

Listed Building Consent has been granted by Malvern Hills District Council for works proposing re-roofing, timber frame repairs, installation of roof lights and removal of a chimney stack (MH/13/0882/LBC). This application was approved on September 4th 2013.

The objectives were to produce a record, comprising drawings, photographs and a written description of the buildings in their current state, prior to alteration and to identify and record any significant structural features or relationships revealed by the building work. This was carried out to meet the requirements of the Worcestershire County Council Brief (Glyde 2013). The work has investigated the chronology, construction and development of the building.

The house can be divided into three structural units: central, hall range and south-east and north-west cross wings. These elements were all originally structurally independent of each other, but the hall range was dependent on the wings for support in its latest phase. Evidence for an earlier phase of the central range was noted, in the form of an open hall, again structurally self-contained, but possibly contemporary with the south-east wing. A 15th-century date is proposed for these early elements.
