In response to a planning condition on the construction of a single storey extension at the rear of 3A Church Street, Baldock, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the owner to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring of the groundworks. It was considered that the present investigation had the potential to contribute to a greater understanding of the origins and development of Baldock from the late Iron Age onwards. The monitoring programme included footing trenches for the new extension to the rear of the existing property.
The excavations revealed a series of brick wall foundations. A brick recovered from the site has been dated to the 18th or early 19th century. Cartographic evidence has demonstrated that the walls are likely to relate to a long narrow building that stood on the site from at least the mid 19th century until the early 20th century. An undated ditch was also revealed close to the southern boundary of the site. This may represent an earlier boundary feature. The significant difference in ground levels between the present site and the churchyard to the south suggests the possibility that the site has seen a large quantity of ground reduction which may have removed any archaeological features or deposits. No features, finds or deposits clearly dating from earlier than the post-medieval period were encountered in the course of the project.
