Introduction

Birch Green, Joseph Rochford Gardens, The Old Coach Road, Hertingfordbury, East Hertfordshire (OASIS ID: heritage1-180096)

In order to characterize the archaeological potential of a new development on land at Joseph Rochford Gardens, Old Coach Road, Birch Green, Herts, the Heritage Network was commissioned by Joseph Rochford Gardens Ltd to undertake archaeological monitoring of the planned groundworks. The site lies within Area of Archaeological Significance No. 228, which includes a series of cropmarks, a trackway and probable field boundaries. The groundworks consisted of a series of machine excavated augured holes evenly spaced in rows across the entire plot to accommodate concrete footings for the arched spine of a polytunnel. These revealed a large quantity of redeposited subsoil overlying an original topsoil. Any archaeological features, finds or deposits will be preserved in situ.
