In response to a planning condition on the construction of a rear extension at 26 Mint Street, Godalming, Surrey, the Heritage Network was commissioned to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring of the groundworks.
The stratigraphy suggests that the garden, at least close to the house, has been terraced. Beneath the 1980s patio natural gravelly sand was encountered as shallow as 0.25m in depth, and the overburden was thicker uphill to the north. The footprint to the new extension had been disturbed by the construction of a patio in the 1980s and the installation of late post-medieval/ modern soakaway, inspection chamber and other service pipes. No other features or artefacts of archaeological significance were observed during the course of this work.
