Introduction

Quinn Rise, Mutfords Farm, Hare Street, Hertfordshire. Watching Brief (OASIS ID: heritage1-245709)

In response to a planning condition on the redevelopment of land at Quinn Rise, Mutsfords Farm, Hare Street, Hertfordshire, SG6 0ED (Figure 1), the Heritage Network was commissioned by Mrs Debbie Eustace to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring on the development groundworks. Planning permission for the development (3/15/1822/HH) was granted by East Herts. District Council (EHDC), subject to a standard archaeological condition issued under the provisions set out in the Department of Communities and Local Government's National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). A full specification for the work carried out is contained in the Heritage Network's approved Project Design dated March 2016. The site is located immediately to the south of a medieval moated site and the 18th century listed farmhouse of 'Mutfords', within an Area of Archaeological Significance (AAS 56).The site forms a detached house within a private garden, with an adjoining garage and conservatory on the southern elevation, centred on TL 39962 28311.The proposed development entailed the demolition and replacement of the existing single storey extension to the house, with a garage and associated services. The results of the monitoring demonstrated a solid geological sequence consisting of topsoil, over subsoil, over natural. Despite the locality of the development to a known medieval moated site, no evidence relating to this was revealed. No archaeological features, deposits or finds were encountered during the course of the investigation. No information was gained that would be considered to contribute to the research aims for the monitoring as defined in the approved Project Design. On this basis, the risk that the proposed development might disturb archaeological remains of any significance may be considered to be Low for all periods.
