Introduction

Photograph of YAT excavations

This archive project relates to archaeological evaluation, assessment and analysis of the 115 hectare site at Heslington East (SE643510). The site lies approximately 3.5km south east from the centre of the historic city of York and is the location of a new campus for the University of York. The site has evidence for human settlement from the Bronze Age through to the late Roman period, with some earlier prehistoric activity, and will allow us to understand, in more depth, the landscape and settlement history of the Vale of York.

The University, as developer, facilitated evaluation by York Archaeological Trust (2002-2004) and then a programme of assessment which was undertaken between 2007 and 2012 by York Archaeological Trust, University of York (Department of Archaeology) and On-Site Archaeology. The archive relating to evaluation and assessment is presented in the first phase of this archive and will be updated with another series of reports when analysis and publication is complete. The evaluation and assessment data is presented here by each organisation but, during the next phase of work, a synthetic approach will result in an integrated publication and associated specialist analyses.

Acknowledgements

The three organisations responsible for the fieldwork/assessment are indebted to the developer (University of York) for funding this digital archive of the project. We are also grateful to the workers, students, specialists and volunteers who have contributed to the research. Patrick Ottaway, Consultant to the University, and John Oxley, Archaeologist for City of York Council, are thanked for guiding the programme of work. We would also like to thank Catherine Hardman and Tim Evans (ADS) for their help with archive preparation.

Analyses and discussion of the site has been published in Internet Archaeology:
