Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Overview

Background to the Project

The survey area covers 126 km² north-west of Gloucester between Highnam and Churcham in the south to Staunton in the north; extending west to Gorsley and north to Little Marcle. The need to identify potential sites for sand and gravel extraction within Gloucestershire to supplement mineral extraction in the Upper Thames Valley led to the Leadon Valley Sand and Gravel Aggregate Area (No. 4832) National Mapping Programme (NMP) aerial survey, which sought to identify and assess historic and archaeological assets visible on aerial photographs within the potential aggregate producing area of the Leadon Valley. The Leadon Valley had an apparently low density of archaeological records in comparison to neighbouring areas of the Forest of Dean, the River Severn valley and estuary and the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), where NMP aerial surveys that are currently ongoing or have been completed have contributed greatly to the archaeological record in the National Monument Record (NMR) for those areas.

As a result of the aerial survey, a total of 187 new monument records have been added to the National Monuments Record (NMR) database (AMIE), and 25 existing monument records have been revised. The Leadon Valley NMP survey has resulted in a 103% increase in the number of recorded monuments in the National Monuments Record (NMR) for the study area. The data from the Leadon Valley NMP aerial survey will inform future planning and management decisions regarding the potential archaeological impact of aggregates extraction and other developments, within Future Mineral Local Plan reviews, reviews of existing minerals planning permissions and assessments of new applications for mineral planning permission. The data collected will be added to the NMR, and Gloucestershire and Herefordshire County Councils' Historic Environment Records (HERs), and through the ADS the data will also be available to members of the public and other interested parties.

The Digital Archive

The archive comprises the following:

  • A digital pdf copy of the final edited report; originally produced as a Word document.

In addition, the report and illustrations are available as a public-accessible document on the Gloucestershire County Council Archaeology Service website at:

http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/archaeology

Non-digital Archive and Publications

In addition to the digital information noted above, The Leadon Valley Sand and Gravel Aggregate Area ALSF project also resulted in the following non-digital outputs:

Published papers
The intention is to publish a short summary of the outcomes of the Leadon Valley NMP ALSF project in a future issue of the Transactions of the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society.
Lectures/meetings
The results of the Leadon Valley ALSF NMP project formed part of a presentation on the results of NMP work in Gloucestershire that was delivered at a meeting of the Nailsworth Local History Society in September 2008. A brief overview of the results from the Leadon Valley ALSF project was also presented at an English Heritage NMP day in Swindon in December 2008.
