Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Introduction

In December 2004, an interdisciplinary, international, archaeological team conducted fieldwork in the Mékrou Valley of southwest NigerArtefacts collected in the Mekrou Valley, Dec, 2004 (12°15N, 2°22E). Dr Anne Haour (then University of Oxford, UK), Dr Oumarou Idé (IRSH, Université de Abdou Moumouni, Niger) and Dr Vicky Winton (then University of Oxford, UK) worked together with dating specialist, Helen Rendell (of Loughborough University, UK) to investigate the Stone Age (Early, Middle and Late) and Historical occupation of the Mékrou Valley. Publications and conference presentations arising from this work include Winton and Haour (2005), Rendell et al. (2005), Winton and Idé (2006) and Haour et al. (in prep.). This ADS archive, comprising images, a spreadsheet of artefacts collected and this introduction, relates only to the 2004 investigations of the Mékrou Valley Stone Age occupation, with particular emphasis on the Early and Middle Stone Age evidence.

Aims of the 2004 Project

  • To assess the potential for field investigations of Early and Middle Stone Age archaeological sites in the Mékrou Valley
  • To assess the potential for dating Mékrou Valley Pleistocene and Holocene sediments, and by association, artefacts interred within these, by Optically Stimulated Luminescence technique
