Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Overview

There are several hundred active aggregates quarries in England with the potential to produce significant fossil and archaeological remains frm the Ice Age. The challenge of monitoring these quarries for significant finds can only be achieved through partnership: patnership between geologists, palaeontologists and archaeologists, partnership between professionals and amateurs, but most of all partnership with the aggregates industry. It is the quarry workers themselves who, day in and day out, have the best chance of making the important discoveries. This inclusive grouping of organisations and individuals sharing the goal of bringing the Ice Age world to light is known as the National Ice Age Network.

Partnership cannot be achieved without knowledge and understanding. A major goal of the project was therefore be the provision and sharing of information together with practical training. Equally, partnership cannot be achieved without interest, enthusiasm and inclusion. A linked goal was education and outreach. These goals were achieved both by the production of literature (and a web site) - attractive leaflets, fossil and artefact 'recognition sheets' and a practical handbook 'Quarrying and the Ice Age' - and by talks, training days, 'hands-on' sessions in museums and field trips across the country.

The Digital Archive

The leaflets, recognition sheets and a number of other promotional materials have been archived by the ADS, and are available from the downloads section.

The digital archive also contains the 'Palaeolithic GIS' created for the West Midlands by staff at Birmingham Archaeology (University of Birmingham). The GIS archive - available from the downloads page - comprises shapefiles derived from the HERs/SMRs of Derbyshire, Herefordshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire; and for which permissions for re-use have been given by the relevant organisations. The original GIS also contained base-line data provided by the British Geological Society (BGS), these have not been submitted to the ADS archive. A technical summary detailing the contents of the GIS accompanies the dataset held by the ADS.
