Introduction

Reducing area to the east, viewed from the south-west. (2m scale).

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by South West Archaeology (SWARCH) during the groundworks associated with an extension and landscaping at No. 2 Rock View, Gulworthy, Devon. The proposed development site is adjacent to a listed building and lies in an area of archaeological significance within the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.

A rectangular area of approximately 11m x 4m was excavated to the north of the house at No. 2 Rock View. The sections revealed that the area was simply covered by a single deposit of gritty gingery-yellow sand, a derivative of the mining activity on the site. Only a single archaeological feature was noted - a cut for the retaining wall which was filled by similar mining waste. It is hypothesised therefore that the area had already been partially covered in mining waste prior to the construction of No. 2 Rock View, and that a platform was cleared/cut through this waste on which the house (and its neighbours?) were then built. No finds were recovered from the monitoring works at this site.
