Introduction

Ixworth LiDAR image

The Suffolk River Valleys Project, was a joint initiative between Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service and The University of Birmingham, funded by English Heritage through the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund. The project was developed to address themes identified through discussions with curatorial and academic archaeologists working in Suffolk and arising in part from another ALSF funded project The Aggregate Landscape of Suffolk: The Archaeological Resource.

The project, which spanned two phases, sought to:

  • Provide baseline data addressing the geomorphological character of selected Suffolk valley floors and the potential of the landforms and sediments recorded within them for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the surrounding archaeological landscape.
  • Provide an assessment of the potential for the preservation of archaeological remains within Suffolk valleys through an understanding of their geomorphological history.
  • Review and collate both the grey and published palaeoenvironmental and geoarchaeological literature into a single volume, chronologically ordered review.
  • Assess the potential impact of groundwater changes on the historic environment and associated sediments.
