Further Information: Leland writing in c. 1542 tells us that 'all the marble in the new fabric of Salisbury Cathedral was supplied for 12 years by Alice Bruer.' She was the owner of Downshay Manor at Worth Matravers in the Isle of Pubeck and the traces of the quarried areas on the Purbeck Marble outcrop at Downshay can still be seen today (Tatton-Brown 1998: 39).
