Further Information: Old Ordnance Survey maps indicate an area known as 'The Pits' (now private woodland), which appears to have been an area of limestone bell-pit and later workings covering five hectares. Such an extensive quarrying area must have been required for some major project such as the castle or Cathedral (Jefferson n.d.: 5).
