A second main quarring area at Clee Hill could be seen at Titterstne Clee Hill, where in 1881 a quarry was opened with a lease to construct a one and a half mile incline of 3ft gauge down to Bitterley Wharf. By the 20th century there was both an East and a West Quarry (Stanier 2000: 144). In 1901 the East Quarry was opened and locally named 'Spion Kop' similar to the quarry of the same name at Threlkeld, Cumbria. |
